Recent Polish events drew large turnouts and served community’s needs
Through two recent and well-attended events, the Evangelical School of Theology (EST) in Poland is having a significant impact on their community.
“The Academy of Third Age” is a program that serves men and women who are generally forgotten in post-Communist countries. It has been so well received and attended that EST, by popular demand, is continuing to offer programs for these elderly citizens. This semester’s program includes:
- Lectures on forgiveness, Alzheimer’s disease, how to help people who are dying, discrimination and other practical topics
- Talks about the Bible
- Concerts at EST and other churches in Wroclaw
- Arts and crafts
In addition, more than 300 people participated in the “Days of Reformation” event. The first day of the three day event featured a discussion on “Christianity and suffering,” followed by a youth choir concert. Money was also collected for a children’s hospice in Wroclaw, which the seminary hopes to start a long-standing ministry with through fundraising, trips and events for the children. “We’re [thankful that we] were able to serve the children’s hospice,...not only by collecting money but mainly by being with them…and helping them in their extremely difficult situation,” said Dr. Wojciech Szczerba, EST Rector. “The whole day went amazingly well. People came to EST from various churches, universities and representatives of the local government.”
The second day featured an ecumenical worship service. “The sermon was deep and thoughtful, the music was great, and the choir was marvelous.” The movie “Amazing Grace” was showed during the final day, followed by a panel discussion where the main topic was “Christianity and contemporary slavery.”
Overall, Dr. Szczerba thought the event went very well. “We were able to integrate other Protestant/evangelical churches as organizers. More than 300 people participated in the whole event. I believe that this precedential ‘Days of Reformation’ set a good example for next year.”
Both events showed the impact that the school is having on their community and meeting the needs of the people. “We are thankful and encouraged by the response to several programs, conferences and special celebrations organized by EST and appreciate your prayers and support for the school and its ministry.”
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us ... in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.” 2 Corinthians 2:14
