Indian seminary partners with church in crucial flood relief efforts

The flood last fall in two states in southern India, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, was the worst flood in the last 106 years. It claimed the lives of 275 people and left millions homeless, according to the Evangelical Church of India (ECI). Many churches were drowned, and thousands of church members were in the streets following the flood, looking for people needing help.

Following the flood, ECI initiated immediate relief efforts to help victims. Bishop-President Dr. Ezra Sargunam (pictured left below) is an alumnus of our Indian partner school, Madras Theological Seminary and College (MTSC), and is currently a faculty member, along with Bishop Sundar Singh (pictured right below). Both men are associated with ECI and its relief efforts. ECI pastors and seminary students continue to be involved in assisting the ECI Relief Team in relief and rehabilitation work among the flood-affected victims, including providing food for the victims and paying tuition fees for the needy children to assist them in their studies. Counseling is also provided.

MTSC is regularly involved in relief efforts and community development programs, along with ECI. For example, The Annai Mangalam Ezra Foundation Fund for the poor was launched in July 2008.

About ECI – It has more than 3,300 churches and 13 Bible schools in different parts of India and is working toward their goal of planting 10,000 churches and 100,000 house churches.
