Missionary couple rise above obstacles and take the Gospel to Northern Africa
South American Theological Seminary (SATS), Brazil |
John* and his wife have touched the lives of many in Northern Africa for the past 20 years as volunteers for a Christian NGO. The Brazilian missionary couple ministers to special needs people, abandoned children and the elderly and also provides emergency healthcare. With a desire to offer a better quality of life for the population, their projects seek to provide sustainable development by offering training courses for teachers of special needs students, as well as life skills like sewing to people in the community. “We seek to carry out a ministry that is focused on the whole person, showing practical Christian love, as well as proclaiming the Good News of Jesus,” John says. “Our primary goal is to bring people to the Kingdom of God through an experience with the Savior.”
However, Northern Africa presents many difficulties for Christians, as most of the population belongs to a different majority religious group who has “twisted ideas about the Gospel.” The couple also lives in a town with no church. “Our greatest challenge is to overcome social and religious preconceptions and stereotypes in order to be able to communicate the Gospel clearly. For this, our greatest joy is in developing friendships, gaining the trust of people and getting close to them as human beings first.”
John will complete his Doctor of Ministry degree in Urban Missions and Church Growth next year from the South American Theological Seminary (SATS) in Brazil. Before leaving for Africa, he led a church-planting ministry in São Paulo, Brazil, and also participated in a transcultural project in Bolivia with his wife.
Please pray for John and his wife, for wisdom, protection, patience and love for the people they serve.
