Update: Pray for cyclone-ravaged Myanmar and OC partner school

MEGST has top three floors for library,
classrooms
Rev. Dr. Aung Mang, President of Myanmar Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (MEGST), contacted OC with this update.

MEGST is safe; however, classroom, office and library windows were destroyed. Two girls’ dormitories lost their roofs. Because they have their own generator, the school has just enough water.

For the city, thousands of house roofs are gone. Power, water, gasoline and patrol aren’t available. The internet is down. Phone access is limited. Trees have been uprooted. Taxi fares from the school to downtown have jumped from 1500 kyats to 10,000, and the cost of daily commodities, such as rice, cooking oil and meat, have tripled in price.

Rev. Dr. Mang asks for continual prayer and thanks the Lord for taking care of MEGST.

State television has estimated the death toll to nearly 35,000, while the UN says the actual death toll could be between 62,000 and 100,000.

***

May 3, 2008 – A devastating cyclone ripped through the Irrawaddy River delta region of Myanmar in Southeast Asia and the country’s main city Yangon, wiping out entire villages and vast rice-growing areas. Myanmar’s state radio estimates the death toll to be 22,000 and rising with more than 41,000 missing.

Please pray for the nation and for OC partner school Myanmar Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (MEGST), located in Yangon. There is no word from MEGST yet as all communication and transportation have been totally paralyzed. (Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a country of about 50 million people.)
