Eighty-six year old Institute offers residential, extension and distance education
Founded in 1923, the Bible Institute of South Africa (BISA) trains students at its Kalk Bay campus, as well as through distance education and an extension campus. Students are drawn from, and go out to minister in, many different countries in Africa and the wider world. With 1945 graduates, the college has a long record of consistently and faithfully training ministers, missionaries, lecturers, teachers and church workers in Bible and theology.
Many social problems face the Church in South Africa, including HIV/AIDS, unemployment, poverty, inadequate housing, dysfunctional families, orphans and crime. BISA students seek to make a difference in their communities, offering holistic counsel and opportunities for healing. The institute has also introduced the Christian Leadership Program, a part-time program training pastors and ministry leaders to deal with societal challenges. The program’s first group of graduates reaches over 1500 people collectively in their churches each week.
BISA offers a Certificate in Bible and Theology, as well as Theology degrees at the Bachelor, Master and Licentiate levels. Course offerings include holistic ministry, biblical peacemaking/reconciliation and practical training. The institution also addresses the need for continuing education and lay leadership training through its extension program, evening classes, weekend seminars and distance learning.
Distance learning student Andrew Graham is studying full-time at BISA while ministering part-time in Wrexham, North Wales. His future plan is to move into full-time pastoral ministry with Bradley Road Baptist Church. He and his wife, Siân, are excited for what the Lord has in store for them. “The distance learning course has thoroughly equipped me for the pastoral ministry I believe I am called to,” he says. “I cannot thank BISA and the staff enough. Studying with BISA has been a great blessing.”
