Ghana partner is a leader in missionary sending

Established in 1966 in the capital city of Accra, Ghana Christian University (GCU) serves students with theologically sound education and practical leadership skills. Ghana is one of the more secure and developed countries in West Africa, allowing more students to pursue theological leadership training. Both English and French-speaking students attend the interdenominational university of 742 graduates, a leader in missionary sending in the region.

In the next few years, GCU sees a shift from rigid programs to more flexible ones to attract more students. The curriculum will most likely be structured to include sandwich, afternoon and weekend training for busy leaders.

GCU also introduced an in-house training program as a strategy for reaching both church leadership and lay leaders who otherwise are not able to come for full-time training. The sustained training program involves biblical, church growth and leadership principles aimed at sharpening skills for effective ministry.

GCU recently hosted five institutions to work on a common curriculum promoting Theology of Work. The university shares faculty and resources with other institutions to promote leadership development as well. Graduates are leading in the provision of community needs, such as healthcare, missions, education and school proprietorships, while many are engaged in community projects aimed at capacity building and poverty alleviation.

Third year student Gifty Gloria Agbo organizes the women in her church and in the Mensah-Bar community to form peer-counseling groups. She teaches the peer educators about business and marriage life skills, good child-raising practices, nutrition, hygiene and Jesus. “The impact of my studies has not only been felt by my church but the community in which I live during the weekends and vacations,” says Gifty. “It has tremendously improved the lifestyles of the women in the community.”
