OC partner school is Namibia’s only evangelical seminary

Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary (NETS) formed in 1991 when smaller colleges merged. Today, the interdenominational seminary has over 260 graduates from their residential and distance programs, and nearly 600 students have enrolled in extension programs, such as pastors training while serving congregations.

The seminary is involved in HIV/AIDS awareness education as Namibia is among the world’s most affected countries. Poverty and nearly 50 percent unemployment are also realities for NETS’ ministry. In addition, about 50 percent of the Namibian population is aged 15 years and under. NETS feels this young sector must be reached to establish security for the country’s future, thus a one-year Certificate in Children and Youth Ministry was created along with workshops and seminars.

As the only evangelical seminary in the country, NETS offers continuing and distance education, as well as certificate, diploma and bachelor degrees. Curriculum surrounding pastoral skills, counseling and spiritual formation are supported by practical ministry and weekly seminars that address societal challenges, such as the spread of other religions in Africa. NETS collaborates with other seminaries, and prisoners are offered the certificate-level program. In January 2009, NETS plans to create a northern Namibia campus to serve the large population.

Student Michael Uri-Khob is a pastor in his home church where he started a program that involves home visitation, hospital visits, farm visits and prison ministry. He also has a restoration ministry that deals with the rehabilitation and uplifting of men in Namibia. He writes, “My courses are equipping me with the tools and weapons needed to be a better pastor.”
