Sierra Leone college heavily involved in AIDS awareness and social ministries

The Evangelical College of Theology (TECT) was founded in 1964 in Sierra Leone, one of the poorest nations in the world. The college of 1,100 graduates is the country’s only interdenominational, internationally accredited evangelical institution and has trained over 2,000 men and women.

The college balances global awareness and local ministry, while curriculum emphasizes contextual realities. For instance, TECT established the Peace and Conflict Studies department when recovering from civil war. TECT is heavily involved in teaching practical skills to enhance quality of life, such as programs that empower women to run small businesses. The college is involved in AIDS awareness and education in the Church and would like to have increased involvement in social ministries with amputees and the war-wounded.

TECT has a Diploma in Christian Ministries by Extension program and an evening program for working students. In the next five years, the college plans to expand its extension program throughout the country, as well as introduce a Master of Arts in Theology degree and design programs exclusively for HIV/AIDS, advocacy and peace-building.

Bachelor of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies student Jane Samura says, “I aim to function in civil society as a peace advocate for vulnerable groups of people in and outside of the Church. My present training coupled with the building up of my life with the Word of God at TECT provides the suitable empowerment for me to function in ministry.”

Current Project Need – TECT operates on three hours of electricity a day with power coming from a standby generator now 21 years old. OC wishes to provide assistance to TECT’s campus development, repairing the generator and cleaning their water supply. Contact OC if you want to support this project.
