Indian extension program has trained more than 30,000 lay leaders
Operating out of Bangalore, India, The Association for Theological Education by Extension (TAFTEE) has been offering non-residential theological education since 1971. With more than 30,000 lay leaders trained since its inception, TAFTEE’s self-study program allows Christian leaders to improve their education and level of training without leaving their homes and fields of ministry. Consequently, TAFTEE is training more Christian leaders than many Christian schools put together but at only a fraction of the cost.
In a nation as complex as India, a program like TAFTEE is a necessity and offers incredible results. The needs of the Church are always changing, and TAFTEE quickly responds by moving into new geographical areas and modifying and expanding its program. TAFTEE has approximately 7,000 students spread throughout India today. The basic program trains about 6,000 students in nine Indian languages; the degree program trains about 1,000 students in English and Tamil; and a small number of students are in the Master’s and doctorate programs.
TAFTEE has entered into many partnerships, including the Friends Missionary Prayer Band (the largest indigenous mission in India) and World Vision of India. As a result, TAFTEE is now training leaders from among the first generation of Christians from people groups, such as the Malto and Santal. TAFTEE also has partnered with World Vision of India to train 1,500 of their grassroots level development workers with the discipleship and ministry course “Following Jesus Christ.”
While he takes TAFTEE courses, Pastor Babu Raj is ministering in Daula, Punjab. He says the courses have motivated his congregation to spread the Gospel to nearby villages and has also enriched the people to lead house churches in nearby areas. Pastor Raj’s wife, Sujana, has also been equipped through TAFTEE courses. She now conducts Bible Clubs for Children and is in charge of a house church.
