Polish school emphasizes interdenominational cooperation for stronger evangelical presence

Founded in 1990 after the fall of Communism, the Evangelical School of Theology (EST) is a nationally accredited interdenominational evangelical institution located in Wroclaw, one of Poland’s oldest and largest cities. After decades of almost no evangelical theological training available for Christian leaders in their own country and language, EST places great emphasis on producing Christian leaders who will cooperate and strengthen evangelical ministry, regardless of the particular denomination they choose to support.

EST offers Diploma and Bachelor’s degree programs, as well as a one-year Leaders’ School program and satellite programs for non-Bachelor students. Many of the school’s 95 graduates serve as pastors and leaders in evangelical churches/communities or work for Christian organizations, such as Christmas in a Shoe Box/Samaritan’s Purse.

Entry into the European Union has created various subgroups in the country, from those in poverty and a growing middle class to an aging population holding onto tradition and a younger generation with prospects for travel and work abroad. EST and the Church in Poland see this change as an opportunity to serve their community and become more creative in meeting those needs. Practical ministry is one of EST’s top focuses as students and faculty work in many ministries outside of the school. EST also organizes a conference at least once a year that relates strictly to the life of the Church in Poland.

Bachelor of Theology extension student Lukasz Gruszczynski has been involved in evangelism outreach to children for years. “My choice of EST was influenced by my appreciation of its interdenominational character and the make-up of the teaching staff,” he says. “I can see how the wider understanding of theology and practical skills I am gaining at EST are helping me in sharing faith with others and are equipping me for deeper and more effective ministry.”

EST’s presence in post-Communist Poland is crucial
