“Jamaica needs their contribution”

The Caribbean Graduate School of Theology (CGST) in Kingston, Jamaica, is the leading evangelical graduate level theological institution in the English-speaking Caribbean. The interdenominational school grew out of the Jamaica Theological Seminary (JTS) and has had over 400 graduates serving around the world since 1986.

CGST aims to equip indigenously trained ministers with sound theological knowledge and training applicable to the area’s unique needs. CGST’s first priority is the local church. Despite numerous denominations, only 30% of Jamaica’s population regularly attends church. Family life in the Caribbean has been under serious threat, and CGST considers it a major priority to equip pastors, elders and counselors with skills to facilitate healthy families.

70% of Kingston’s churches send students to CGST where Master’s degrees offered include Business Administration, Counseling Psychology, Divinity, Interdisciplinary Studies and Theological Studies. Through various ways such as biblical stewardship, breaking the cycle of economic dependence and making theology relevant to local churches, the school demonstrates both global awareness and the need to contextualize the Gospel.

The University Council of Jamaica recognizes CGST as one of Jamaica’s and the Caribbean’s premium institutions and commends the school “for its responsiveness to regional changes…as a bridge institution providing education to link the Church and wider society…In the challenging times in which we live, the knowledge and skills being taught in this program…and each of [the students] will make a significant difference for good...Jamaica needs [their] contribution.
