OC Regional overview: Agents of transformation, catalysts of change
As the world's largest and most populous continent with over 3.5 billion people, Asia is home to many religions, including most of the world's Hindus, hundreds of millions of Buddhists and more than half of the world's Muslims. Islam is the majority religion with Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh each having more than 100 million adherents. Asia also has more than 2,200 languages, the largest number spoken in the world, according to Ethnologue. These religious, cultural and ethnic diversities present great challenges and opportunities for the Church in Asia. Theological education is the key to transforming lives of future leaders who in turn will transform communities for Christ. OC's partners in Asia are finding unique ways to be catalysts of change. The following are a few examples:

To reach the “malling” generation, Dr. Ferdinand Pabrua, an alumnus from Alliance Graduate School (AGS), Philippines, initiated a church planting project in fast food chains. Now expanded into two McDonald’s and two Burger King outlets in the city of Marikina, Metro Manila, Philippines, Marikina Christian Alliance Fellowship is reaching out to the managers and crews of each chain and planning to conduct leadership development module classes in the facilities. One particular chain attributes its top sales ranking in the country to the presence of the Christian fellowship. Dr. Pabrua serves as the Senior Pastor, while his wife, Beth, a Bible school faculty member and AGS alumnus, and three other couples serve as Associate Pastors.

Tiranus Bible College (TBCI), Indonesia, located in Bandung, is mostly inhabited by Sundanese, the largest unreached people group in the world. In keeping with traditional Sundanese literature that is basically oral, the seminary is working with Beulah Ministries of India and a local foundation to record the New Testament in the Sundanese language in drama/music form. Several Sundanese students, alumni and TBCI staff are supplying their voices for this project being recorded in TBCI’s facilities. The principal, faculty and staff also take part in a weekly broadcast, speaking on and answering questions about Christian beliefs.

Situated in a religious-cultural center where hundreds of villages have not heard the Gospel, students at Allahabad Bible Seminary (ABSI), India, are able to learn the best cross-cultural approaches to a wide range of people representing all the major religions of India. “Highly commended” by church leaders for their notable work and ministry, ABSI students and faculty have established 26 prayer and worship groups of increasing attendance (35 people or more) in the surrounding villages. ABSI says, “Each week, people from other villages are requesting that we visit their villages for ministry.” In addition to holding worship services, the students and faculty teach the villagers literacy classes and good health and hygiene.

2 Corinthians 3:18 – And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Thank you from OC scholars

“OC has a special place in my heart because it has played a vital role in the completion of my doctoral program…May God bless you. There are many like me around the world who remain grateful to you.” – Dr. V.V. Thomas, Assistant Professor in the Department of History of Christianity and Former OC Faculty Scholar, Union Biblical Seminary (UBS), India

“At first, I was reluctant to do pastoral ministry because I had no formal seminary training. Now I have the confidence for ministry…I was able to put directly and immediately into the ministry what I learned in the classroom…[Besides preaching,] I believe God will also use me in teaching and preparing others for their ministry.” – Valentin G. Lopez, OC Scholarship Student, Master of Divinity in Biblical Studies, Asian Theological Seminary (ATS), Philippines

"Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord" - Psalm 27:14

A great example of God’s faithfulness written by Dr. Samson Parekh, Principal of Union Biblical Seminary (UBS), Pune, India

God responds amazingly when we ask in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and take a bold, practical step of faith to extend and strengthen His Kingdom. I have experienced this in my life for more than 32 years. Let me narrate a recent incident that took place.

In addition to the residential theological training we have at the Bachelor and Master levels, we also offer theological training by extension (Master of Divinity) at Union Biblical Seminary (UBS), India. The Church is growing rapidly in India, especially in North India where the main language is Hindi. Many pastors and lay leaders in charge of newly established congregations in Northern India cannot afford to spend four years and sizeable funds for residential theological education. Therefore, by translating our 26 English extension education courses, we would be able to take the theological training to them in their own language. A foundation promised the required funds for this large project. After praying and waiting for a few months, we did not get any response from them. However, we decided to launch the program with a consultative workshop of 10 Hindi translators and a few resource people. It indeed was a pure step of faith.

People came from all over India. The workshop was to start at 9 am. At 8:45 am, I decided to send a reminder email to the foundation for the funds. However, before doing so, God strongly prompted me to check my three email accounts. It was in my third account that I received a message that the foundation had already sent the whole amount to our office a couple days before! This was not only a confirmation that our translation program is in the will of God but also a response to our practical step of faith. Also at short notice, four very significant resource people were able to join us, despite their extremely occupied schedules and ministries. The project is underway, and many of God’s servants from about 10 states in India are being theologically trained to teach the Word of God to their flocks in their own Hindi language.

We prayed, believed in God and took a step of faith. God indeed responded according to His promise. He invariably does the same in every area of our lives. Faith in action can achieve a lot for the Kingdom of God. “Trust and obey, for there is no other way….”

Prayer: Dear God, help us to walk not by sight but by faith in your promises because we know that you are a promise-keeping God and can make impossible things possible. Amen.
Graduate's heart for community turns disaster into blessing

After a fire burned down 110 plank houses in Grandpass, Colombo, Pastor S.J.P. Jayaprakash of the Grandpass Gospel Tabernacle Church responded to an emergency call for food. Not only was food provided, but the church, community and authorities were mobilized to rebuild houses made of brick. This particular housing complex is home of a 350-family community of Sinhala and Tamil ethnicity where a very small Christian presence exists.

Through this process, Jayaprakash found out the community only had two usable toilets with an open sewage drain running among the homes. Enlisting volunteers from the church and community, Jayaprakash completed the project, giving the community 12 toilets and a state-of-the-art septic tank. This community effort has generated much unity among the people and positive response to the church, opening up doors for the ministry among the community. Jayaprakash’s future plans for developing this community include education classes for the children in English, art and other subjects; forming a children’s club; setting up a medical clinic; and renovating the library.

Jayaprakash is a graduate and former OC scholarship recipient from Colombo Theological Seminary (CTS), Sri Lanka. He received the CTS Community Award at the 2007 graduation. “My vision is to develop the community rather than to only build up the church,” Jayaprakash says. “After all, Jesus himself responded to the needs of the 5,000 by feeding them - with no strings attached.”
